ALEX: I’LL GET ONE OVER DAD

HAMILTON v RANGERS

- ANTHONY HAGGERTY a.haggerty@dailyrecord.co.uk

ALEX GOGIC admits he’s out to earn the family bragging rights when he squares off against Rangers tonight – 22 years after his old man almost stunned the Light Blues.

Sinisa Gogic played for Anorthosis Famagusta when they gave Walter Smith’s seven-in-a-row winners an almighty scare in the Champions League qualifiers in 1995.

Light Blues midfielder Paul Gascoigne listed Gogic’s old man as one of the toughest opponents he faced as the Glasgow men squeaked through on a 1-0 aggregate.

Now Hamilton Accies stopper Alex is out to go one better when Gers travel to the Superseal tonight.

Having netted in the 4-1 Premiership home defeat by Celtic, Gogic has set his sight on an Old Firm double by notching the winner.

He said: “When I first moved to Scotland my dad told me about his experience playing Rangers.

“He came close to beating them and if I can succeed on Friday then I’ll tease him that I did what he couldn’t.

“I scored against Celtic but the game was over – it’d be nice to get a goal against Rangers which meant something, especially if it was the winner.

“I’m looking forward to it. It’s a big game and it won’t be easy but we believe we can get a positive result.”

The 23-year-old spent four years at Swansea training with big-name talent under Michael Laudrup but failed to make a first-team appearance before signing for Accies in March.

But Gogic insists he’s got what it takes to make it down south and hopes to prove to the Swans they shouldn’t have let him go.

He said: “Laudrup was the manager when I signed and I’d train with the first team whenever they needed extra players but I never got the opportunity to play.

“It was still a good experience for me and they had some big names – in my last season I trained with Wilfried Bony, Jonjo Shelvey, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Ashley Williams who helped me a lot defensively.

“It was good for me just to watch them play.

“Do I regret things not working out for me there? I guess so but that’s life.

“I believe that everything happens for a reason and I’m settled here now, playing football and enjoying it.

“You never know what will happen – it’s not as if I’d say no to Swansea if they came calling again.”
