Vicar’s daughter in an unholy mess

-

THERESA May surely knows all about the power of miracles.

She is the daughter of a vicar, of course. And that’s exactly what European Commission boss Jean-Claude Juncker thinks she needs.

His withering assessment of May’s progress on Brexit is an embarrassment.

Britain is being mocked on the international stage, and for good reason.

EU negotiators can see only too clearly how bad the Tory Government are handling Brexit.

And out in front, May is supposed to be offering leadership, while her “friends” line up to undermine her.

It’s hard to pinpoint the exact moment May’s Government started this painful implosion. So let’s just start with this week. On Monday, Chancellor Philip Hammond made it pointedly clear that he doesn’t think May’s up to the job of leading Tories into the next election.

May was also exposed to ridicule by the US decision to whack enormous tariffs on plane parts built in Northern Ireland.

Maybe it wasn’t really worth holding hands with Donald Trump after all.

Under pressure at home, in Europe and on the world stage, May needs more than a miracle to end her political nightmare.

For everyone else in the UK, it’s not a miracle that’s required.

Britain just needs a decent government.
