A MAN with special needs was left battered and bruised when he was attacked near a bus station.

Peter Menellis suffered serious injuries in the assault on Saturday night.

The victim’s family released pictures taken in hospital as they appealed for help to catch the attacker.

Peter, 25, had treatment for injuries to his face, hand and neck following the assault on Hill Street in Kirkcaldy at about 11pm.

His cousin Carlie Young appealed for anyone with information about the attack to come forward or to contact police.

In a social media post which was shared more than 2000 times, Carlie said: “Someone has done this to my big cousin Peter Menellis, who has special needs.

“This happened at Kirkcaldy bus station at around 11.30pm. Anyone that knows anything, please feel free to message me to let me know to tell the police.

“The more evidence the better. He’s had to get staples/stitches and also get glued.

“Please share to see if we can find the person. He had a blue Adidas hat on.”

Carlie said later: “Thank you to everyone who shared the post about my cousin Peter Menellis.”

Carlie said later that a suspect had been caught. She also said a weapon was found.

She added: “The CID has said he isn’t from the Kirkcaldy area.”

Peter was treated in Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy.

Police confirmed they had detained a man in connection with the assault.

Detective Sergeant Samantha Davidson, of Kirkcaldy CID, said: “The victim sustained serious injuries and our investigation into this incident continues.

“We’re eager to speak to anyone who witnessed the assault, or who was in the Hill Street area around this time. And we would ask those with information to contact us as soon as possible.”
