Thrills, spills and chills

LIAR

STV, 9pm ACTOR Ioan Gruffudd can pat himself on the back – he’s overtaken Doctor Foster’s Bertie Carvel as the most hated man in Britain. In shocking scenes in Liar last week, his character, the handsome surgeon Andrew Earlham was revealed as a rapist. Viewers could barely believe the doting single dad, with impeccable manners, could possibly be the manipulative monster who drugged and raped Laura ( Joanne Froggatt). “He’s a functioning sociopath,” explains Harry Williams, who wrote the series with his brother Jack. Then in the mother of all cliffhangers, Andrew told his lawyer: “She owes me” as we saw that creepy stuffed bunny and realised just how dangerous he is. In tonight’s episode, Laura travels to Edinburgh, determined to uncover the truth behind Andrew’s wife Mary’s death. At first she has no luck but then her flight gets cancelled (perhaps it was Ryanair?) and she finds herself stuck in Edinburgh for another day. But she’ll be glad she stayed on as she finds out something deeply disturbing. Meanwhile, Andrew tells his son: “I’m taking steps to make sure people know the truth and that everything she said was a lie. “Believe you me, it will be over soon.” This, now that we know the truth, is frankly terrifying. With more plot twists, plus a filming style that makes you feel as if someone is watching the action, this is a gripping episode. There are burning questions tonight: Has Andrew done it before? What happened to Mary? How will Laura react? But the main question you should ask is: What is he going to do next? And trust me, it’s chilling...
