Davidson’s positive spin on disaster
RUTH Davidson put on a brave face after the Prime Minister’s speech.
The Scottish Tory leader tweeted: “If ever the PM needed a metaphor for service and duty and resolution through adversity, that battling performance was it! Huge respect.”
Other senior Tories also tried to pretend May’s conference meltdown had been a success.
Environmental Affairs Secretary Michael Gove said: “I thought it was a fantastic speech from a Prime Minister at the top of her game.”
Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said it showed a “great sense of duty”.
East Renfrewshire MP Paul Masterton added: “It was a clear reminder why she’s the right person to be taking the country forward – a stinking cold, some idiot at the stage and she did what leaders do.”
Even Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, who has spent the last two weeks undermining May’s position, said it was a “brilliant speech”.
Labour and the SNP showed no sympathy for the PM.
SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford said: “May’s speech – beset with problems and protests – proved the ‘British dream’ is a Tory nightmare for communities hit by years of austerity, cuts and low economic growth.”
Labour’s shadow Scots Secretary Lesley Laird said: “Theresa May and her party offer nothing but division and deprivation.”
