watching the 1998 World Cup at a cinema.

“Our school took all the pupils to watch the game against Brazil and those sorts of memories will always stick with me.

“That is what we want to give young people growing up today – memories of experiencing a World Cup and saying, ‘Remember when he scored that goal’.

“That’s what we are striving towards, we want to get there and we are doing everything we possibly can on the training field as we want to step up for the match.”

Scotland will, however, need to find a way past Slovakia without captain and midfield dynamo Scott Brown, with the Celtic star ruled out of the upcoming encounters through injury.

His Parkhead mate Stuart Armstrong will also sit out the double-header with an injury and while McArthur is adamant Scotland do have the talent to fill that void he concedes the loss of Brown is a massive blow after claiming the Hoops skipper could cut it at the very top of English football.

McArthur said: “Everyone will need to step up because Scott is a massive player for the country.

“He is a player I rate really, really highly.

“Maybe I shouldn’t say this but I’m actually gutted he didn’t go down to England because I think he would have shown everyone down there how good he is as well.

“I think he could be playing at a top team in England, although obviously Celtic are a top team, and I’m gutted he didn’t make that move.”
