GARY’S PREPARED FOR ALL-OUT WAR

- MICHAEL GANNON

GARY CORNISH insists he’s ready to go to war to make Scottish boxing history.

The Highlander has his heart set on becoming Scotland’s first British heavyweight champ by blasting away Sam Sexton in Edinburgh tonight.

Cornish – who has lost just once in 25 fights – is determined to follow in the footsteps of Anthony Joshua, Dillian Whyte and Tyson Fury by claiming the crown on home soil.

The Inverness puncher, who clocked in at 18st 1lb at yesterday’s weigh-in, said: “We’ve seen a fair few videos of him and he’s coming for a war. I hope he does – that’s what I want. I’ll stop him late on.

“It’s a dream for me. If you said at the start of my career, that’s what I set my mind to. I never thought I’d get to that level but I have. I’m ready for it.”

But title rival Sexton is adamant he can handle the heat of fighting in front of Cornish’s home crowd.

The Norfolk hardman said: “If you can go to Belfast and win twice in front of those fans you can go anywhere. Going into the lion’s den in Scotland will not faze me one bit. Where is the pressure going to be? It’s on him. I am just going there to do my thing.”

Scot Stephen Simmons insists his IBF East/West Europe cruiserweight title bid against Sam Barclay on the same card will fire him on the world title trail.

The Edinburgh ace, who has won 17 of 19 bouts, said: “If I win it sends me up the rankings and my eventual aim is to win a world title.”
