Tory MP’s shameful Mugabe meeting

-

TORY MP Sir Nicholas Soames is in trouble today for meeting Zimbabwean dictator Robert Mugabe while on a work trip.

When he was asked what business the two men could possibly have, Soames said it was purely personal and that they spent the meeting discussing his father’s time as the last governor of Southern Rhodesia.

My God – I really thought the days when the Tories reminisced about the British Empire were long behind us. Alas not. At 93, Mugabe might be in his pipe and slippers but he can never escape the atrocities he brought against his own people. Nor should any serving British politicians try to legitimise his standing with a visit like this, no matter how private it’s meant to be.

Over the weekend, the Sunday newspapers speculated that Amber Rudd might be a far smarter replacement for Theresa May than Boris Johnson, but the only thing holding her back was her tiny constituency majority of fewer than 400 votes in Hastings and Rye.

Labour would rightly gun for that seat knowing that not only could they add one more to their tally, they could feasibly topple a Tory prime minister in the process.

An easy get out strategy for Home Secretary Rudd would be to move to the safe Tory seat next door.

A seat currently held by one Sir Nicholas Soames.

Perhaps that’s not such a bad move after all. That way he can spend more time with bloodridden dictators.
