A DRIVER has admitted knocking down a little boy and fleeing the scene. John Macdonald, whose Facebook page promotes the benefits of cannabis, left the four-year-old with serious injuries. A sheriff warned him that he is facing jail. But according to the child’s mother, no sentence will be enough for what Macdonald did to her boy. She said: “He could have killed my son. They can throw away the key as far as I’m concerned.” Macdonald, 34, admitted careless driving and hitting the child, who cannot be named for legal reasons, in Inverness in July. He also pled guilty to failing to stop after the accident.

Inverness sheriff Gordon Fleetwood told him: “Driving away and leaving a four-year-old boy lying on the street may result in a custodial sentence.”

Macdonald will be sentenced next month.

The boy was crossing the street to join his brothers and their pals playing football in Bught Park when Macdonald, of Inverness, hit him.

Witnesses said the victim was thrown into the air and landed about 10 yards away.

The boy was flown by helicopter to Aberdeen Royal Hospital for emergency surgery. He was only discharged a few weeks ago and still faces months of rehabilitation.

His mum said she cannot get over Macdonald’s actions.

She added: “What kind of human being leaves a wee kid after hitting him with a car? You wouldn’t even do that with a dog.

“My boy needed 36 stitches down the side of his head where he struck the road after being flung in the air. His skull was showing.

“He’s only just got rid of the stitches and now he trying to walk again. He’s got a wee Zimmer in the house and needs a wheelchair to go outside.

“I can’t put into words how I feel about Macdonald. I hope we get justice.”
