Courage of Weinstein accusers
IT’S been difficult to miss the news about Harvey Weinstein this week.
More than two dozen women, among them actresses Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Rose McGowan, have made accusations against the movie mogul.
Some have claimed he committed rape and sexual assault – although Weinstein denies any non-consensual sex.
The accusations keep coming as more women step forward to share their experiences.
It’s been alleged that Weinstein’s behaviour was an “open secret” in the film industry, with the circulation of rumours for decades.
He is a powerful man who has been a huge figure in the film world. His productions have received 81 Oscars and, in his position of power, he can make or break careers.
We cannot underestimate the bravery required by these women to come forward.
Emma Thompson claimed there are many men like Weinstein in the film industry. She said having to deal with sexually exploitative men has been part of “our world, women’s world, since time immemorial”.
Sexual harassment and the abuse of power is not unique to Hollywood.
We can only hope the Weinstein case means we have reached a tipping point.
The organisation behind the Oscars have voted to expel Weinstein, his brother called him “sick and depraved” and it’s been reported he may be stripped of his CBE. In addition, police investigations are under way in London and New York.
