Mum calls for action after fence impaling
A FURIOUS mum has launched a safety campaign after her six-year-old daughter was impaled on a garden fence.
Lilly McDaid suffered horrific injuries – ripping her bowel in three places – after she tumbled from a bin shed roof on to a metal fence.
Lilly’s mum Michele has launched a petition calling on housing authorities to replace cylindrical spire fencing, which she fears may be illegal.
Brave Lilly managed to pull herself off the railings before collapsing from her injuries.
She was bleeding heavily and had to undergo four hours of surgery and was fitted with a stoma bag.
Michele, 43, from Castlemilk, Glasgow, said: “I’ve started a petition as my daughter suffered lifechanging injuries due to her accident on this kind of cylindrical spire fencing.
“I contacted my local housing association to ask for these to be removed or made safe to prevent any future accidents happening to anyone else’s child.
“But they have refused. They say they are not a danger and this was just a freak accident.
“I’m appealing for everyone to back me on this.”
Previously, Thenue Housing said: “With regard to the fence, this design is very widely used across housing developments by many housing providers and developers across the UK.”
