I asked if she killed Inaya & she said ‘yes’

THE father of tragic toddler Inaya Ahmed has told a murder trial his wife confessed to killing their daughter because she was a burden.

Suleman Ahmed, 31, also claimed wife Sadia, 28, never bonded properly with the child and suffered “bouts of anger and baby blues”.

He broke down in tears when he was shown a holiday photo of himself with Inaya taken just months before she died.

Mr Ahmed told the court: “I asked her if she had killed my daughter Inaya and she said, ‘Yes.’

“I asked her, ‘Why did you kill Inaya?’ and she said she found her a burden.

“I then asked her how she did it and she told me she used a pillow.”

Sadia Ahmed denies murdering 14-month-old Inaya at home in Drumchapel, Glasgow, on April 17 last year.

Mr Ahmed claimed his wife was “completely calm” when she confessed in May last year at his brother’s home nearby. The court heard Mr Ahmed did not tell police of the conversation.

Earlier, Mr Ahmed was asked by prosecutor Paul Kearney: “Were there issues that concerned you about your wife’s care of Inaya?”

He replied: “She didn’t really bond with Inaya. If she fed her at night-time, she would have a problem getting up in the morning and feeding her.”

Earlier in his evidence, Mr Ahmed said his wife became upset when she realised she was going to have a girl.

Mr Ahmed told the trial most of Inaya’s care and feeding was done by his sister Shagufta Yasmin and his mother Noor Ahmed. He said his wife “was crying quite a lot”, adding: “It was baby blues. Her behaviour was not normal.”

The jury heard that weeks after the birth, Ahmed began re-enacting Inaya’s birth.

Mr Ahmed said: “It was as if she was going through the labour again.”

He said he told her doctors she’d had a “bout of anger” and thought it was a side effect of her medication.

The jury heard a relative phoned Mr Ahmed at his work at a pub to tell him about the tragedy.

He was asked if he spoke to his wife when he got home and replied: “No.”

The trial at the High Court continues.
