Provide a real health service

There are many careers to pursue if you care about the wellbeing of other people

-

WE ALL know how important it is to look after our health by eating properly, exercising regularly and generally taking care of our own wellbeing.

But most of us will rely on the help of others at some point in our lives, whether that be a doctor, optician, psychologist or midwife.

So the people who provide these services aren’t just employed in an industry that’s hugely rewarding, it’s also a vitally important one.

For those interested in a career in this sector, there are loads of different opportunities and something for everyone regardless of skill set or expertise.

From care assistants and nurses to doctors and surgeons, they all have a role to play in keeping us healthy and providing care when we need it most.

You could work behind the scenes on crucial research in a lab or be on the frontline dealing with patients in hospitals, clinics or even in their own home. Some healthcare workers go on to specialise in a particular area, such as working with the elderly or those with mental health issues.

As well as being rewarding, another reason to consider a career in this industry is that you will almost always be in demand.

The NHS are the UK’s most prominent and well-known providers of healthcare and employ more than 1.5million people.

That puts them firmly in the top five of the world’s largest workforces.

Depending on which field of healthcare you choose, it should be easier to find employment compared to some other industries – and stay in a job. As well as working for the NHS, jobs within the private healthcare or private/non-profit organisations are other options.

There is no doubt that working on the frontline in healthcare can be challenging.

You’ll often be expected to work shifts, including long and unsociable hours, deal with stressful situations and be calm while working under pressure.

You’ll need excellent people skills and the ability to handle patients with care, sensitivity and respect. But when your shift is over for the day, you’ll be able to head home knowing you’ve made a real difference to someone else’s life.
