Everything scrapping

- MAGGIE BARRY m.barry@roadrecord.co.uk

ELEVEN out of 27 countries in Europe posted a drop in car sales in September.

The fall of 2.2 per cent – 32,157 fewer cars – is largely due to lacklustre sales in the UK because of Brexit, according to the automotive research experts at JATO.

But there has never been a better time to buy a new car. The diesel crisis and announcements from countries such as France and Britain that they will ban the sale of fossil-fuelled cars from 2040 have prompted the car industry to fight back.

Within days of the 2040 announcement, most manufacturers had put in place scrappage schemes, with a view to getting older cars off the streets – and boosting the sales market.

However, most of these schemes will run until the end of the year for orders and, in some cases, as far as March when it comes to registering the car.

Some deals apply to petrol and diesel cars and some just to diesel.

A few commerical vehicles are on offer from Citroen, Ford and VW, and hybrids and electric cars are there, too.

The person who buys the new car has to be named as the owner of the scrappage car and must have owned the older car for at least 90 days in some cases, six months in others and for 12 months if they want a BMW.

Here are some of the highlights: AUDI Scrappage applies to diesel models only but the cash – up to £8000 for the Q7 e-tron – can be put against 27 models including the TT (£4000).

The A3 Sportback e-tron attracts £5000 scrappage plus a £2500 OLEV (Office for Low Emission Vehicles) grant. BMW Under their Lower Emissions Allowance, cars must be diesel Euro 4 (check at carfueldata.direct.gov.uk/ search-new-or-used-cars.aspx).

The allowance can be used in conjunction with other deals and applies to cars with emissions of less than 130g/km from BMW 1 to BMW 7 series, the X1 and X5 and the i3 and i8 and the MINI Countryman PHEV. CITROEN Scrappage applies to all makes and models of petrol and diesel pre-2011 registered cars and vans against Euro 6 petrol and diesel models.

Deals range from £1750 to £6400 for cars (including VAT) and £3000 to £7000 for vans (excluding VAT). DACIA Their small but efficient scheme only applies to the Duster – but excluding the Access model.

Any car registered before December 31, 2009, and owned for 90 days will net the owner from £500 to £1000 plus a deposit contribution provided customers take finance and a five-year warranty. DS AUTOMOBILES The scrappage petrol or diesel car must have been registered before December 31, 2010, and owned for 90 days for new DS cars ordered and registered by December. Cars include the DS3 and DS3 Cabrio. Cash is from £3500 to £5500. FORD Open to any vehicle registered before December 31, 2009, their scheme can be applied to Ford cars and vans. The incentive allowance is £2000 but can be matched by customer saving deals from £1500 to £5000 for a Transit van. Vehicles must be registered by December 31. HYUNDAI This scheme applies to every vehicle in the Hyundai range and runs until the end of December. It includes all petrol and diesel cars registered before December 31, 2009. The maximum discount is £5000 off a Santa Fe, with £2000 off the Ioniq hybrid. KIA Cars seven years and older of any type can be scrapped against a low-emission Rio or Picanto in a scheme worth £2000. MAZDA Scrappage cars registered before December 31, 2009, can be traded in against various Mazdas with sub 130g/ km emissions, including the Mazda6 saloon and estate (£5000). MERCEDES-BENZ They are offering £2000 off a new diesel Mercedes, a plug-in hybrid or a smart electric car registered by December 31.

Scrappage applies to any diesel car in the Euro 1-4 category. MITSUBISHI Their best deal is on the Outlander PHEV, which attracts a scrappage allowance of £4000 plus the OLEV grant of £2500. The firm will take any vehicle registered before December 31, 2009.

The scheme is running until December 28. RENAULT The deal applies to Renault vans and cars to Euro 4 standard and older and, with customer savings offers included, means allowances from £4250 to £5200 on cars and up to £7000 on vans.
