How to find the perfect foundation to keep your skin glowing through winter months

- MERLE BROWN reporters@dailyrecord.co.uk

YOU need to get the perfect base in winter – and we’re not talking about choosing the right thermals.

As well as changing up your clothing wardrobe, you need to restock your skincare and make-up bags, starting with finding a foundation that will work for your skin in winter months.

Choose something that will protect your skin from harsh winter elements, preferably something with lots of skincare benefits.

You also need to think about how winter light can dull the skin, how you can restore luminosity and how to tackle the red cheeks and nose combo that winter frosts brings.

Moving to a fuller coverage foundation in winter shouldn’t be something you are afraid of. Think of it as a heavy winter coat for the skin.

Full coverage doesn’t mean caked on these days, far from it.

MAC’s Studio Fix Fluid Foundation SPF15 (£23.50) comes in more than 40 shades.

MAC senior artist Rebecca Butterworth said: “When you’re choosing a foundation for winter, look for foundations that have added skin care benefits and also think about coverage.

“I usually recommend a fuller coverage foundation to help disguise those winter rosy cheeks.

“Studio Fix is our bestseller for a reason – it’s perfect for a winter foundation combining full flawless coverage with skin-smoothing and oil-controlling ingredients.”

Cushion compact foundations are perfect for winter, as they tend to offer a more rich and full coverage than liquids and are easy to apply.

Bobbi Brown’s Skin Foundation Cushion Compact SPF35 (£36) is packed with skin-boosting, rejuvenating ingredients like pink silk tree extract and caffeine, and is truly customisable – you can build right up to a full coverage, but the feeling is weightless.

Glasgow-based Bobbi Brown PRO artist Aimee Morrison believes a new winter foundation should be something that lifts the skin.

She said: “Swap your mattifying foundation for a dewy foundation to give your skin a healthy-looking and radiant glow. I love Bobbi Brown’s Extra Illuminating Moisture Balm and wear it on top of my moisturiser before foundation as a primer.”

Aimee also suggests ditching summer bronze for something more natural. She added: “In winter, our skin can be slightly paler and our foundation needs to be a perfect match.

“It’s best to try to add warmth with a bronzer and a pop of blush and not the wrong shade of foundation.”

We all love that barely-there BB cream look in the summer but when the days gets shorter and the weather is against us, it’s time to treat ourselves to luxury.

Chanel’s Sublimage Le Teint foundation is as luxurious as it gets – it is almost £100 a tub. It’s packed with things like Diamond Powder and Vanilla Water to offer a rich, hydrating base – perfect for winter.

Clarins have three perfect Skin Boosters (£30 each) that will transform your foundation and give it extra benefits, without the need to buy a new one.

Energy, Repair and Detox add an extra dimension to your base, each one giving extra care to skin that is either tired, weakened, or congested.
