MVG: I’m best chance of Dutch victory as darts and football go head-to-head

MICHAEL VAN GERWEN reckons he’s the best bet for a Dutch success in Scotland this month.

The World No.1 is the man to beat in Glasgow this weekend as he heads for the Ladbrokes World Series of Darts Finals which takes place this weekend, starting on Friday.

Van Gerwen is the defending champion at the Braehead Arena and has no intention of loosening his grip on the silverware.

Victory for the world champion would be a good omen for Holland ahead of their football team heading to Aberdeen on Thursday for a clash against Scotland.

However, the PSV Eindhoven fan reckons there’s more chance of him doing the business than Dick Advocaat’s under-achieving Dutch team winning in the Granite City.

Van Gerwen said: “Being in Scotland is something I always enjoy and there is a nice chance for me to put a little marker down.

“Our football team are heading over behind me next week but I’m not sure about them these days. You can’t count on them to win anything!

“I love my football but it hasn’t been much of a watch seeing the Dutch team recently. Not qualifying for the World Cup was a sore one and I’d imagine it was the same for Scotland.

“Maybe there is a better chance of Holland getting a win in Scotland this weekend in Glasgow and not Aberdeen on Thursday. That’ll be down to me and I fully intend to keep up my end of the bargain.”

Van Gerwen will arrive in Glasgow tonight for his World Series bid in typicallyimperious form.

The 28-year-old has enjoyed another spectacular year on the circuit having lifted his second World Championship crown in January.

A fourth-successive win at the European Championships in Hasselt last weekend made it 37 TV titles in a career which has seen him rocket to the summit of the sport.

Van Gerwen also has a terrific record in Scotland. The Dutchman will get going in Saturday’s second-round stage and said: “I’m feeling good. I had a final against Rob Cross last weekend and had to play well.”

“But last week is gone. It’s on to the next tournament and that’s Glasgow.”

I always enjoy being in Scotland, there is a chance to put down a marker VAN GERWEN
