Canning: Mistakes so costly for Celts

- GAVIN BERRY sport@dailyrecord.co.uk

MARTIN CANNING sympathised with Brendan Rodgers after watching Bayern Munich pounce on mistakes to punish Celtic.

And the Hamilton gaffer reckons that would have been as frustrating as the pride in his team’s overall performance.

Celtic impressed against the Germans in their Champions League Group B clash but Dedryck Boyata’s poor judgment and Nir Bitton losing out to Javi Martinez in the air meant Callum McGregor’s goal counted for nothing.

Accies gaffer Canning said: “It was a pity because the performance deserved something from it.

“Celtic were excellent but that’s just football, especially at the top end.

“When you play the top teams and the best players it doesn’t need to be a massive mistake – just switching off for a second can cost you.

“It’s the same in the Scottish Premiership. Mistakes are what win and lose you games, it’s not the quality of your play which dictates how many points you take from matches.

“At Champions League level it’s different because teams have more ability and even small errors are seized on.”

While Rodgers was full of praise for his players Canning knows he’d have preferred a scrappy win.

He said: “You would take as much pride if they had performed poorly and won 1-0 or sneaked a draw.”
