Everton are left Lyon in tatters

-

FORMER Chelsea star Bertrand Traore was the scourge of Everton again as he sent the managerless Toffees crashing out of Europe.

Traore, who netted the winner in the Ligue 1 side’s 2-1 victory at Goodison Park a fortnight ago, opened the scoring midway through the second half.

Sub Houssem Aouar and former Manchester United man Memphis Depay wrapped things up against the Toffees who had Morgan Schneiderlin sent off.

The defeat coupled with Atalanta’s 1-1 draw against Apollon Limassol means Everton can’t progress from the group stage with two matches remaining as David Unsworth’s hopes of being made permanent manager were dealt a further blow.

The ex-Toffees defender, who was promoted from the club’s academy to become caretaker boss after the sacking of Ronald Koeman, has now lost all three games he has overseen.

He said: “I’ve been honest with the players. I told them what I think is required to move forward. It is best left in the dressing room but I’ll continue to be honest.”

Unsworth’s gameplan had worked well for the opening half as his side stifled the French but Traore opened the scoring in the 68th minute when he outpaced the Everton backline and slotted past Jordan Pickford.

Their second came 14 minutes from time when Aouar threaded his shot past the reach of the England keeper, who was already spread out on the turf having saved from Mariano Diaz in the build-up.

The visitors were then reduced to 10 men after Schneiderlin received a second yellow for a foul on Maxwel Cornet.

And with two minutes remaining Depay, who had set up Aouar’s strike, applied the final blow when he headed in the third from six yards.
