WHO CAN SINC CELTS? ONLY US, SAYS SCOTT

RECORD-BREAKING CELTIC

- CRAIG SWAN c.swan@dailyrecord.co.uk

SCOTT SINCLAIR last night insisted Celtic themselves are the only team who can halt the Invincibles.

The Parkhead winger is determined to keep raising the bar and reaching new levels of excellence after Brendan Rodgers’s squad smashed a 100-year record at the weekend.

Celtic’s win over St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park made it 63 domestic matches unbeaten and eclipsed the mark set by Willie Maley’s team in 1917.

Since Rodgers arrived in May last year not a single Scottish team has been able to get the better of the treble-winning champions in 18 long months.

Sinclair reckons Celtic can continue to keep their record

intact. He said: “Is ourselves the only thing that can stop us? That’s it because when you look what we’ve achieved it’s down to us.

“We need to keep improving, not get complacent and keep moving in the right direction. It’s down to us and taking every game as it comes. That’s what we’ve done.

“We’ve beaten the record now so we want to go on and keep breaking our own record. Winning mentality is the biggest thing.

“Every game we go into we want to win and if we can break more records along the way then great.

“We don’t want to stop now, sit back and say, ‘Well, we beat the record’. We want to raise the bar, keep winning and make sure it doesn’t stop now.”

Rodgers echoed Sinclair’s sentiments and added: “It’s important players have goals and targets to achieve.

“This was never a destination for us. We wanted to achieve it of course but we have to keep moving forward.

“This cycle we’re in, we want to really dominate. But we won’t get carried away. It’s a great achievement but there’s a lot of work for us to do.

“I remember getting the champagne when we beat the 50-year record of 26 before. I looked at it in my office and thought, ‘What an achievement that is by the team’. Now I have one for 63, the squad deserve all the credit they get.

“You could never have said coming in here that we would do this. Going back to that team Willie Maley had, people of my age will be aware of guys like Patsy Gallacher. That was a great team with great players who achieved so much.

“For us to go beyond them and make it 63 games unbeaten is a special feeling.”
