WOMEN’S FOOTBALL

ABBI GRANT scored twice to help Glasgow City beat Stirling Uni 3-0 and stay two points clear at the top of the Scottish Building Society SWPL1.

With just two games left in the race for the title, City will go head to head with rivals Hibs at Ainslie Park on Sunday.

And in-form Grant showed the champions are determined to stay on track after 29 minutes.

The City forward fired into the roof of the net from close range after keeper Chloe Logan had saved her first attempt following a Nicola Docherty cross.

And the hosts were soon further ahead when midfielder Leanne Crichton thundered the ball past Logan from inside the box after Katie McCabe cut the ball back from the byeline.

Grant made it 3-0 for City in 62 minutes as she raced on to a well-timed Hayley Lauder pass to slot her second of the match and 20th goal of the season.

City boss Scott Booth said: “It was a really good first-half performance in particular. We created lots of chances and played some really good football.

“The only downside was we perhaps were not clinical enough but credit to the players because they kept pushing for goals.

“In the second half I was delighted we got the third to kill the game and we saw the match out professionally.”

Hibs kept up their challenge with a 4-1 victory over Rangers.

Kirsty Smith, Rachael Small, Siobhan Hunter and Abi Harrison grabbed the goals for the Ainslie Park side – who also had two players sent off in the last 10 minutes.

Spartans saw off Celtic 3-2 and battling Aberdeen survive another week after Chloe Fitzpatrick’s hat-trick earned the rock-bottom side a 3-0 win against Hamilton.
