Prof claims Alistair’s murder is now ‘solvable’

NEW evidence has emerged about the murder of a Scots banker on his own doorstep 13 years ago.

Father-of-two Alistair Wilson, 30, was gunned down in Nairn, near Inverness, on November 28, 2004.

His wife Veronica had opened the door to a stocky man in a baseball cap holding an envelope, who asked for her husband by name.

Bank of Scotland business manager Alistair spoke to the man, went back to speak to his wife then returned to the door, where he was shot dead.

A vintage Schmeisser pistol was found in a nearby drain 10 days later – but the murder has never been solved.

Yesterday, David Wilson, professor of criminology at Birmingham City University, revealed that a mystery man had given him the name written on the envelope that was handed to Alistair before he died. Speaking on the John Beattie Show on BBC Radio Scotland, he also said his source had named a second witness to the murder.

Prof Wilson, 60, said: “I received a package last Thursday. Within it were eight closely-typed pages entitled ‘Alistair Wilson – a Cold Case Thesis’.

“There was a single name identifying the person who put the package together – that was ‘Nate’. The postmark would appear to be Glasgow.

“I was going to presume it was an armchair detective relaying materials already in the public domain.

“But something else was included – information I hadn’t known before.

“I hadn’t heard that the envelope handed to Mr Wilson at the doorstep had the name ‘Paul’ written on it. This package also identified an independent witness. If there was one, I’m intrigued that no e-fit has ever been produced of the person who carried out the killing.

“I’d always presumed that a ‘master hitman’ carried out this crime and that the case would be unsolvable.

“But because of what the package contains, if it’s accurate, I now think it is eminently solvable.

“And I hope the police have had a forensic accountant dealing with the clients Mr Wilson had. The package I’ve received talks about those issues.”

Prof Wilson said his new information has been passed on to Police Scotland.

Detective Superintendent Gary Cunningham confirmed: “Investigations into Alistair’s personal and professional life have been a focus of the inquiry.”

But he added: “There is not sufficient information to produce an e-fit.”
