Scots ace won’t ask for Samoa after kilt shock

SCOTLAND star Stuart Hogg admits struggling to do up a kilt jacket for a rugby pal’s summer wedding forced him to get in shape for the autumn Tests.

The Glasgow Warriors full-back decided to overhaul his diet after being left red-faced when he couldn’t fit into his usher outfit ahead of Edinburgh star Duncan Weir’s big day in July.

Hogg has since lost nine kilos during his recovery from a shoulder operation which was pencilled in following his premature withdrawal from the Lions tour with a facial injury.

The hard work has paid off for the Scots’ most potent attacking threat who looks set to earn his 54th cap against Samoa on Saturday.

Hogg said: “I was sick of seeing photos of how fat I was getting. I knew I was getting a shoulder operation and I had the potential to balloon.

“I was struggling to get the jacket shut from the measuremen­ts taken six months earlier and decided to make a difference.

“I have lost about nine kilos and now sit between 92 and 94 kilos it’s made a difference to how I play.

“I feel I can go longer and have a bigger influence on the games this month. The challenge now is to stay at this weight.”

Hogg has not turned out for Scotland since their Six Nations clash with Italy in March.

But the newly-energised 25-year-old believes he can help build on June’s impressive 24-19 defeat of Australia in the Test matches with Samoa, New Zealand and the Aussies this month.

He said: “The challenge is to stay at that level. We have to be at our best to beat the top teams in the world.
