Shiels’ anguish at Bairns taunts

From Back Page throwing the book at Bairns striker Kevin O’Hara who copped an eight-game ban.

O’Hara’s team-mate Joe McKee is also accused of mocking the Northern Ireland international’s disability and will learn his fate on Thursday.

But former Kilmarnock boss Shiels believes the SFA have already sent out a message abuse won’t be tolerated by slapping the mammoth suspension on O’Hara. And he’s adamant there should be zero tolerance in sport for anyone crossing the line.

He said: “I commend the SFA for the decision they’ve taken. There are people who have disadvantages and handicaps in sport and life in general and it’s not good practice. I have no doubt the boy regrets it.

“I can’t compromise judgments as there’s another one on Thursday but this has been difficult for Dean and it’s hurt him.

“He’s had this throughout his career but previously it’s come from the stands.

“To get it from fellow professionals is what hurts him more than anything.

“A line has been crossed in terms of integrity and decency. There is a line you don’t cross in sport and this is one.

“Racism is one example of that but action is being taken now which wasn’t the case years ago.

“The situation with Dean is entirely different to anything that can be deemed banter.”

Ex-Rangers star Shiels, 32, was red-carded against Falkirk for a wild lunge on McKee but his dad insists there were mitigating circumstances.

He said: “He deserved to get sent off during this incident but it was through frustration and these things.”
