Grace but no favours as Branden pips Scott

SCOTT JAMIESON had to settle for second place in the Nedbank Challenge at Sun City, South Africa, despite a brave bid.

Home hero Branden Grace reeled off a closing six-under 66 for a total of 11 under to beat the Scot, who shot 70, by one stroke.

Jamieson’s effort did, however, get him a place in this week’s season finale in Dubai, a likely spot in next year’s Open at Carnoustie and the biggest pay cheque of his career, £630,440.

The Scot went into the last day leading at eight under, one ahead of France’s Victor Dubuisson.

By the 16th tee it was a three-way tie for the lead with Grace, Jamieson and Dubuisson all in the hunt.

However, it was the South African who produced what proved to be the winning shot at that hole with a stunning 40-foot birdie putt.

Jamieson said: “I’m a bit disappointed as things were looking good but I just had a little blip on the eighth where I had a double bogey.

“But I played with some of the best players in the world this week and proved I can compete with them.”

● Scotland’s Michele Thomson, who led by three shots going into the final round, had to settle for second place in the Hero Women’s Indian Open in Gurgaon. She fired a closing one-under 71 but was pipped by France’s Camille Chevalier (67) who finished a stroke clear on 12 under.
