see Mollie on screen. I was so proud. It was filmed in August, so it’s been a long time coming. I felt quite emotional seeing her on the TV.

“As much as we were there, it was nice to see the playground and the classrooms properly as we weren’t involved in that side of it. It was great to see all the things she’d been up to and what the other kids were like as well.

“At the end of each day, I’d ask what she’d been up to but she wasn’t the type to tell me very much. I couldn’t wait to see what she’d been doing.

“Mollie is not a big feature in it but she still has quite a lot of footage on it.

“There’s a fun bit when Rory is trying to put her hat back on when she’s hanging upside down on the monkey bars but it won’t work and he’s saying, ‘Watch out for my girlfriend’.”

Laura is delighted Mollie has made new friends. She said: “That was the main thing I was hoping to get out of it.

“Now I know Mollie has got friends in England and Wales and all over which is nice at four years old.”

She said the families would meet up in the hotel in the evening after filming and close friendships were formed.

Laura added: “The kids would be practising each other’s accents. You had Scouse and Welsh and Newcastle accents. It went from not knowing each other to feeling like family.

“Mollie loved the last day with the butterfly ball where they all got to dress up. She can go from being a right tomboy and playing football and superheroes to wanting to be a fairy princess and doing make-up and hair.

“For the end bit, she got to dress up in fairy wings and was dancing. The staff said that’s when Mollie came into her own – when she was doing dance moves.”

Laura also saw Mollie’s vulnerable side. She said: “As much as Mollie said she enjoyed herself, there were a couple of kids she was wanting to get in and play with but they’d established a friendship already because they’d been there from week one.

“Maybe for one of the days she felt a wee bit left out. But apart from that she was absolutely fine.”

Mollie is usually in bed by 7.30pm but she’ll be allowed to stay up late to watch herself on TV – and she’s looking forward to seeing herself on screen.

Laura is excited too, as she wants to take in some information from the experts who discuss the children’s behaviour in the show.

“It’s so fascinating when they sit and describe a possible reason for behaviour and things you possibly wouldn’t pick up on.

“How the show was put together can be so insightful for people at home.

“It’s not just all amazing behaviour. They show you tantrums as well so for people at home it’s quite reassuring that maybe you’re not the only one at home with a four year old with tantrums.

“They give you a wee bit of feedback after each day and they said Mollie had such a caring nature.

“They said she has an insight into how other people were feeling. “It was a once in a lifetime experience – not a lot of people can say that they’ve done that.

“It gave me a wee insight into seeing what she’s like in nursey as you don’t usually see what they’re up to.

“I’m pleased nothing came out that shocked me.” She joked: “I’ll be able to show my face where I stay.” The second episode of The Secret Life of 4 Year Olds is on Channel 4 tonight at 8pm.

She became really pally with Rory. That’s who her close friend is now. LAURA DIXON
