FIREFIGHTER COUNCIL CLERK POSTMAN Shop worker now holds down nine jobs
A SHOP worker fed up with city life moved to a tiny island – where she has taken on NINE jobs.
Sarah Moore’s roles on North Ronaldsay, Orkney, range from carer to firefighter. She also herds sheep and delivers post.
At the airport, she puts in shifts as an air traffic controller and baggage handler.
The 26-year-old, who previously worked at Next in Edinburgh, is also a clerk for the island council, drives diggers on the farms, and even leads tours of the island’s lighthouse.
But Sarah, who is the youngest of the 45 residents on the island, says she wouldn’t have it any other way.
She said: “It’s not an easy life and it’s not a place anyone comes to get rich, but I love it. It was lonely in Edinburgh, even though there are so many people there.”
On such a small island, romance is harder to find and Sarah says her friends there are keen to see her settle down.
She said: “Our school closed last year because the only pupil left, so we are desperately in need of families here.”
The lack of young people is also behind the number of jobs Sarah is doing.
She said: “Some of the islanders are getting to an age when they need to retire, but the people coming in and taking over those physically demanding jobs are also in their 50s.
“I like a bit of variety and that’s certainly what I’ve got here – it can sometimes be hard to keep track of what jobs I’m doing on any particular day.”
