THE most northerly inhabited island in Scotland is hoping to join the space race.

Shetland Space Centre have been formed to help launch Unst’s bid – after the UK Space Agency identified the former RAF radar station at Saxa Vord on the island as an “ideal location” for satellite launches.

Company director Frank Strang said there is “tremendous potential” for Unst to become part of the UK’s £13.7billion space industry.

Legislation on space flight that’s going through Parliament could allow vertical launches of satellites from the UK for the first time.
