A TEENAGER found dead in her flat was due to appear in court on an assault charge three days later.

The 17-year-old, named in court papers as Meighan Boyle, although she used the surname Reid on her social media page, was set to stand trial at Selkirk Sheriff Court yesterday.

She was accused of seizing a female by the hair and punching her in the face at Tweed Green in the Borders town of Peebles on April 21.

She was also on deferred sentence for police assault, struggling violently with police and behaving in a threatening or abusive manner in Peebles town centre in September. But the cases were “not called” after Meighan was found dead at her flat in Caddon Court, Innerleithen, Peeblesshire, on Saturday.

It is suspected her death was drug-related.

Police are treating the death as unexplained although there appear to be no suspicious circumstances.

On Monday, Meighan’s mother Katrina Boyle sobbed in the dock at Selkirk Sheriff Court as she awaited sentence on an assault charge when her daughter’s death was mentioned.

The 35-year-old was given a 12-month community payback order with supervision and a drug treatment requirement.

It has also emerged that Meighan’s father is serving a life sentence in prison for murder.

Body-in-a-suitcase killer Kevin Gibson battered Timothy Wallace, 24, to death before throwing luggage containing his corpse into an Edinburgh river in 2003.
