QUeeN OF THe sOUTH set up a tie with partick Thistle at palmerston in the fourth round of the scottish Cup and boss gary Naysmith welcomed the underdog tag.

goals from stephen Dobbie and Derek Lyle either side of a graham Webster equaliser for Montrose secured the clash with the top-flight Jags in January.

Delighted gaffer Naysmith said: “It flips now. Montrose had a shot at us now we get a shot at partick Thistle with nothing to lose.

“Nobody outside of the club will expect us to get a result which is better for us. We like being the underdogs. It’s one for us to look forward to.

“I’m relieved in the end to get through. In the first half we controlled the game and limited them to virtually nothing and got the goal.

“What changed the game was the two minutes before half-time when we gifted them the equaliser.

“In the second half Del’s scored an unbelievable strike and goals change games. after that we gave away a lot of silly fouls.

“at the end of the day we got through but Montrose will probably take the credit out of that match more than us.”

Dobbie was first to fire a warning shot but his effort was narrowly wide.

Darren Brownlie then had his header blocked on the line and the rebound fell to Dobbie but his follow-up was smothered by keeper allan Fleming.

But in 25 minutes the deadlock was broken when Dobbie volleyed in a Connor Murray cross.

John Rankin and Lyndon Dykes missed chances to double the advantage and Queens were made to regret those opportunities when Montrose equalised just before the break.

Cammy Ballantyne’s deep cross found Webster whose looping header dropped into the net.

Dykes had another chance before half-time but his tight-angle shot was blocked on the line.

after the break Kerr Hay was through on the Queens goal but the forward blew his chance.

and in 67 minutes Lyle hit the Dumfries side’s winner after a long James McFadden throw-in.

The ball fell to the veteran striker who sent a curling half-volley into the top corner from just inside the 18-yard box.

Montrose boss stewart petrie said: “I’m disappointed with the result but I thought the effort of the boys again was immense.

“We wish Queens all the best in the next round.”
