Top cop off duty as crime claim is probed
ONE of Scotland’s highestranking police officers was suspended last night as part of a criminal investigation.
Assistant chief constable Bernie Higgins has been put on leave as police watchdogs probe him and five other officers.
Three of those have also been suspended while another two have been placed on restricted duties.
Police Scotland would not disclose the nature of the allegations.
But investigators from the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) said they had received an anonymous tip-off alleging criminality by officers.
The claims were then discussed with officials at the Crown Office who ordered the criminal probe to be carried out.
In a statement issued by his solicitor, Higgins said he “denies and rejects any allegations of wrongdoing”.
He added that he would cooperate fully and planned to resume his duties as soon as the matter was resolved.
The Scottish Police Authority said they suspended Higgins following a “number of criminal and misconduct allegations”.
They said the suspension will be reviewed in four weeks or if there is a change in circumstances relating to the investigation.
The allegations are the latest in a series of controversies to rock Police Scotland.
Chief constable Phil Gormley was suspended in September over allegations of bullying. It is understood PIRC are investigating five allegations against him.
