AYR fans may be getting excited about their tableGARDNERtopping

side hitting a ton of goals this season but Ian McCall is concentrating only on getting the better of Alloa.

Last weekend’s 6-2 win over Banks O’Dee in the Scottish Cup took McCall’s side to 65 goals in this campaign.

And supporters are looking for their side to beat the 104 total reached in season 1987-88 when Ally MacLeod’s team lifted the Second Division title.

However, Ayr boss McCall said: “Some people might be talking about us scoring 100 goals but all I’m concentrating on is getting at least one more goal than Alloa.

“A win at their place would give us our fifth league victory in a row and just as importantly nine points out of nine from what could be viewed as pivotal fixtures.

“We went up to a good Arbroath side and won before winning a home game against a Raith side who were sharing top spot. Now we’re going to a difficult venue and facing an Alloa side who are in their best form of the season.

“If we could win it would be a terrific return from the players against sides who will be up challenging us all season.

“We may have scored a lot of goals but that does not count for anything. Alloa have only lost two goals in their past five games and have won all of them. This will be a really tough challenge for us.”

Alloa boss Jim Goodwin reckons Ayr’s strength in depth up front is highlighted by Craig Moore’s run as a sub.

Goodwin said: “Ayr score for fun and the fact Craig, who has scored 15 goals this season, cannot start for them shows you the strength they have.

“We know it will be hard to keep them out however we have shown recently we can be quite mean.

“We also know we can score against them as we scored three times at their place earlier on this season.

“If we could win this game 1-0 rather than lose it 5-4 I would be delighted as our momentum would continue to grow.”
