COMPANY MAN MURRAY TURNS MENTOR

-

ANDY MURRAY last night revealed he has set up a sports management company and will take a hands-on role in mentoring the talent under his wing.

The 30-year-old Scot, still working back to fitness after hip problems wiped out half his season, plans to pass on his wealth of experience through 77 Sports Management.

Recruits will also have access to the three-time Grand Slam winner’s wider team including sports science, nutrition and commercial opportunities.

Murray, who first started playing competitive tennis aged five, said: “I signed with a management company when I was 12, 13 which is way too young.

“You don’t need that pressure and my parents were not experienced in dealing with those situations. You can get into trouble by signing long-term contracts that might not be in your best interests. Things like that you can avoid if you’ve got the right people around you.

“Throughout my career I’ve worked with three or four different companies and found a number of people who I liked and trusted. That’s how it began.

“Then I thought I could look at helping younger British athletes go through that transition from juniors into the senior ranks and mentor them along the way.

“It interests me a lot. I want to work with the best British athletes whether that’s male or female.”

Murray’s first recruits are Scots tennis player Aidan McHugh, 17, and 20-year-old English twin sprinters Shannon and Cheriece Hylton.
