Chances of playing were slim

DUNFERMLINE v QOS

DEREK LYLE admits he suffered at the start of the season after paying the price for a summer of overindulgence.

But the Queen of the South striker hopes he’s worth his weight in goals now that he’s reaching peak fitness again.

Lyle tied the knot with wife Nicola in Mexico but enjoyed the food on offer at the five-star all inclusive resort a bit too much.

On his return he jetted off to Dubai for his honeymoon and admitted he felt the affects when he started pre-season.

Lyle said: “I’m looking to get more starts and get a run in the team because it’s frustrating when you come off the bench. A striker’s confidence comes from scoring goals and I’m confident if I get chances.

“I usually train right through the summer but I got married in Mexico – 60 of us went away so it wasn’t exactly quiet.

“It was a hectic summer and I felt it caught up with me in pre-season. But I got over it and I feel just as fit as at any time in the last five years.”

Dunfermline striker Michael Paton insists the play-offs are the minimum target for the Pars this season – and reckons they can win the league.

He said: “Last season we were finding our feet in the Championship but we have players in the dressing room who are more than capable of making a mark.

“The play-offs are definitely an aim but we’re more than capable of winning the league.

“We’re only seven points off the top so if we can go on a run then we can get up there.”
