Del’s decision to stay was a shock but the statement was unbelievable.. this is not the way Rangers should conduct their business

approach on Tuesday, Derek and his assistant Tony Docherty missed training on the Wednesday and Thursday so it looked just a matter of time.

You can never say never in football. I’ve been in situations myself during contract talks when things have stalled but if I was a betting man I would have had my money on Derek being the new Rangers manager.

You don’t get many opportunities to become the manager at Ibrox.

Most bosses don’t ever get asked and you certainly don’t get asked twice. But something has obviously gone on that we aren’t privy to.

It’s easy to listen to rumours and it’s easy to start one but we won’t know the ins and outs until Derek gives his side of the story in detail.

It has been a surprising saga but ultimately a disappointing one as I firmly believed he was the right man for the job.

When Rangers come calling, 10 times out of 10 you would expect that person to take the job so there is clearly something on Derek’s side he hasn’t been happy with. He knows he won’t get asked twice so it must have been something Derek really believes should have happened.

Now it’s about moving on and Rangers have someone in charge at the moment in Graeme Murty. I’ve said in the past he’s not the right man to get the post permanently, he’s not ready.

But he has done a fine job as caretaker, with the exceptions of the Hamilton and Dundee games, and you have to give him credit for that.

There’s no issue from me for Graeme being in charge for the foreseeable future because he has the backing of the Rangers players.

That can clearly be seen from the two games against Aberdeen.

I was impressed with the football they played but what really stuck out was the desire, fight, spirit and application from everyone in a Rangers shirt.

That is down to the players but the manager also deserves credit. The club now needs to move on. Derek is staying at Aberdeen and Rangers need to look elsewhere.

I’m sure the fans will get behind Graeme in the weeks ahead. But this let’s put this one behind us as it’s not been a week where some at the club have covered themselves in glory.
