RODGERS: DEL WAS RIGHT TO STAY WITH REDS

- MICHAEL GANNON m.gannon@dailyrecord.co.uk

BRENDAN RODGERS reckons Derek McInnes is right to stay put at Pittodrie if he’s happy with the Dons.

The Aberdeen boss shocked Rangers by turning down the chance to take the Ibrox hotseat this week and committing to the cause in the Granite City.

Yet Rodgers insisted he wasn’t surprised McInnes opted against switching clubs – as he knows the grass is not always greener.

The Hoops gaffer dismissed links with West Ham and his former club Swansea because he’s content at Parkhead.

So Rodgers understands why Dons boss McInnes would also prefer to remain in place.

He said: “I can only talk now, having had five jobs as a manager. When you have that experience you tend to look at it differently.

“You’ve been on that journey to get to what is the big club. Then from that you can make other decisions around your next move.

“There has to be a strategic element to it. Of course there will always be the personal element.

“In modern football you’re going to have a number of jobs.

“But what you can’t discard – and maybe that’s what Derek has thought about – is happiness.

“Sometimes you’re doing well at a club and people tend to think you should move. I know now from my experiences that doesn’t have to be the case.

“If you’re doing well in your job then it’s OK to keep doing well.”

Rodgers is comfortable at Celtic Park and is looking to dust himself down after another difficult night in Europe in midweek.

The Hoops boss admitted the 1-0 defeat to Anderlecht was disappointing but highlights his side’s achievement of qualifying for the Europa League.

Celts are back to domestic duty at Hibs tomorrow and Rodgers is looking to continue the long unbeaten run up to the winter shutdown next month.

Rodgers said: “We’ve played 31 competitive games so far. We’ll have virtually done a season by the time this month ends.

“But that’s the nature of it. We want to be successful and if you’re going to be successful you have to be ready to play with intensity.”
