Scots student’s US gun charge after attack on lover

- SALLY HIND

A HIGH-FLYING Scots medical student is facing gun and assault charges in the US after being accused of attacking his glamorous vet girlfriend.

Tony Boyd, 23, is back in the UK after he was released on bail following his arrest for an alleged attack on Fife-born Sophie Kelly.

The aspiring doctor and businessman, from

Troon, Ayrshire, is alleged to have fired a gun during an attack on Sophie and a friend.

It came just weeks after she moved to Waukesha, Wisconsin, to work as a veterinary surgeon.

Boyd first appeared in court in the US on August 14, when he entered not guilty pleas.

After paying bail fees of $15,000 – more than £11,000 – he was released and allowed to return to Scotland.

The case against him was called in court in the US this week but he has been allowed to remain in Scotland to continue his final year of studies at the University of Glasgow until he faces trial in the States.

Court papers show that Boyd – who also runs his own online sportswear company – is facing one charge of discharging a firearm, two charges of battery and a charge of criminal damage to a property on August 11.

Sophie, originally from Inverkeithing, claims Boyd attacked her and a friend after travelling to Wisconsin to help her settle in to her new life there.

She said: “When over here, he attacked myself and a friend of mine and fired a gun at us.

“He was arrested and put in the county jail.”

The pair were dating for several months before the incident and had enjoyed luxury breaks in Spain, Greece and Thailand together.

Sophie regularly modelled for Boyd’s sportswear brand.

Boyd denies all of the charges against him.

The medical student is listed in court papers as living in Troon with his dad Lewis Boyd – a restaurant boss who was once convicted of bugging his wife’s bedroom when he suspected her of having an affair.

Court papers in Tony Boyd’s case stated: “In exchange to the agreedupon bail, the state will not be requesting that the defendant turn over his passport.”

Boyd has been absent for three hearings and was represented by lawyer Paul Bucher.

At a hearing of the case on Monday, the court noted that Boyd was not present due to his studies in

Scotland. A further hearing was set for March next year.

Since Boyd was released on bail, he has been ordered to abide by strict restrictions, including a complete booze ban and having no contact with his ex-girlfriend.

Court papers state: “Absolute sobriety, defendant is not to possess or consume any alcohol.”

As well as studying medicine, Boyd runs a company called Nero Apparel in Glasgow.

We tried to contact him at his home and his business yesterday but got no response.

In 2011, dad Lewis Boyd was sentenced to 240 hours of unpaid work after admitting bugging his wife’s room.

Ayr Sheriff Court heard that the businessman – who ran three restaurants in the area – listened to a phone call between her and a male friend using an adaptor with a microphone.

A year later, he was convicted of making an abusive and threatening telephone call to his wife and sentenced to another 200 hours of unpaid work.
