Trump should get a hot reception

-

DONALD Trump should be able to come to the UK and be welcomed appropriately by officials and politicians alike.

He is the head of state of one of our greatest allies.

But his forthcoming visit to open the new US embassy in London will undoubtedly be greeted by huge protests. The visit will be a carefully stage-managed affair where organisers will attempt to play down the strength of feeling against Trump.

Hopefully, though, some of the anger will get through.

Trump should know the people of the UK disapprove of his crass, vulgar and dishonest presidency.

He should know his policies and conduct, including his moronic use of social media, have discredited the office held by Lincoln and FDR.

And this gung-ho US commander-in-chief should be left in no doubt the hostility he has provoked is anything but “fake news”.

Unfortunately, at some stage, Trump will be welcomed back for a formal state visit – the invitation has already been extended.

He will be received by the Queen with the full pomp and ceremony the occasion demands.

He is not the worst to be given such an honour. Too many dictators, tyrants and heads of murderous anti-democratic states have been given the red carpet treatment, including Romania’s Nicolae Ceausescu and Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe.

But by some distance, president Trump has set a new low for the highest office of the US, a country the free world has depended on during its greatest moments of peril. He deserves to be told.
