GLASGOW airport was brought to a standstill yesterday as flights were grounded or diverted because of freezing rain.

Hundreds of passengers faced delays due to the weather phenomenon, which sees rain freeze on contact with a cold surface.

Many scheduled flights were halted after 4pm due to ice on the runways as emergency airport crews tried to clear the tarmac.

Glasgow airport went on social media to advise customers of the delay.

Furious passengers took to Twitter to quiz the airport about what was happening and vent their anger at the lack of information.

Seven flights which were due to arrive were diverted to Glasgow Prestwick and Edinburgh airports.

Four British Airways flights were cancelled to and from London City.

Glasgow airport’s runway was understood to be back in operation at 6pm after staff had cleared the frozen tarmac.

A spokesman for the airport said: “Due to adverse weather conditions, operations were temporarily suspended to enable our teams to carry out de-icing procedures on the airfield and passenger ways.

“This unfortunately led to a number of delays and aircraft being diverted to other airports.

“Arrival and departures resumed at 16.30 and the airport is now operating as normal. We apologise for any inconvenience this caused but would stress the safety of passengers, crews and staff is our first priority.”
