SUBO? MRSBROWN? STAN BOARDMAN?MARADONA?

A NEW statue of Argentina football superstar Diego Maradona has created a global outburst of hilarity – as it was compared to our own Susan Boyle.

The 12ft statue unveiled in Kolkata, India, is supposed to be the perfect likeness of the former Napoli star on his greatest day – when he lifted the World Cup for Argentina in Mexico in 1986.

But it was widely panned on social media with even the Twitter acount of Mrs Brown’s Boys claiming it looks more like Brendan O’Carroll’s foul-mouthed Irish mum than Maradona.

One Twitter user posted pictures of West Lothian singer Susan Boyle, Mrs Brown and the statue and wrote: “One of these is a statue of Diego Maradona.”

The statue bears little resemblance to the then 25-year-old captain of his national side and more to Scouse comedian Stan Boardman.

But the man himself, now 57, looked happy enough when he unveiled it in the Indian city before celebrating by kicking footballs into the crowd.

He told the crowd: “I am not god of football but a simple footballer. It’s amazing to have my statue here.”

Maradona isn’t the only football hero to have problems. Cristiano Ronaldo became a laughing stock when a bust of him was unveiled on Madeira.

Former Fulham FC owner Mohamed Al-Fayed caused a stir when he unveiled a statue of Michael Jackson outside Craven Cottage in 2011.

And Andy Murray looked unimpressed when he stood with a statue of himself dressed as a terracotta warrior in Shanghai the same year.
