I’M LOOKING AFTER NO.1

- MICHAEL GANNON m.gannon@dailyrecord.co.uk

RUSSELL GRIFFITHS is delighted to get the chance to grab the gloves at Motherwell but was so desperate for action he would have tried his luck as a targetman.

The Fir Park keeper is ready to pounce on his opportunity between the sticks after regular No.1 Trevor Carson busted his shoulder ahead of the Hearts defeat last week.

Former Everton academy product Griffiths, 21, is determined to catch the eye against Partick and said: “I’d put my hand up and say I could play up front if I ever got asked!

“But you know what life is like as a goalkeeper. Now it’s up to me to respond. Trev’s loss is my gain as harsh as that sounds.

“If you’re not in the team as a goalkeeper then you’ve got to be patient, bide your time. That’s what I feel I’ve done and now I’m in the team I’ve got to do what I can to keep my spot.

“Trev’s done well and the team’s kicked on this season. But now he’s unfortunately injured and I’ve got to look to take my chance.

“He got the shirt at the start of the season and it was for me to try to take it off him. I’m in the team now and I’m looking to keep the place as long as I can.” would’ve made him the best paid player at Motherwell for 15 years.

“Above and beyond what we can afford. But he’s well within his rights to do what suits him and he’s told me he won’t be staying at the club.”

Robinson would love Moult on board for the rest of the campaign but he admitted money will talk in January – and he’s already looking at reinforcements.

He said: “We’re still speaking to several clubs about Louis. We always expected this.

“We made a brave decision in the summer to turn down bids. It’s been a justified with Louis scoring 14 goals. But if someone puts an offer in during January then you have to look at everything.

“We’re always working hard at potential signings. We’ve spoken to various people and seen what’s available in other leagues.

“Our market’s quite limited, probably League Two and the Conference. But we’ve got our eye on the ball.”
