Student doctor denies aiming firearm after finding lover with man

A SCOTS medical student facing gun and assault charges in the US yesterday insisted he is innocent.

Glasgow University student Tony Boyd, 23, was arrested in Wisconsin for allegedly attacking his vet girlfriend Sophie Kelly and firing a gun at her.

But he yesterday claimed he fired the gun in a freak accident after he found her in her bedroom with one of her male colleagues.

He insists he found the weapon in the man’s bag after both of them had fled – and no one was near when it went off.

We told yesterday how Boyd, from Troon, Ayrshire, who also runs a sportswear company, paid bail of more than £11,000 to get out of custody.

He denies discharging a firearm, two counts of battery and one of damaging a property.

He has returned to Scotland but must return to the US for trial next year.

Sophie, from Inverkeithing, Fife, claims Boyd – who travelled to Wisconsin to help her settle in to her new job – attacked her and her friend and fired a gun at them in August.

Boyd said: “I came home to find her in her bedroom with her colleague. I threw a few punches at him and chased him out.

“I emptied the guy’s bag in the back porch once both had left and found a firearm which I unintentionally fired off into the distance.

“No one else was present. It was a complete freak accident.”

Boyd’s next court date is in March.

University chiefs said yesterday they would decide if their student code of conduct has been breached once the legal proceedings are over.

If Boyd is found to have breached the code, his future as a doctor could be in jeopardy.
