Council claw back stolen £1m

A COUNCIL have recovered almost all of the £1,065,085 stolen by a former employee.

IT officer Mark Conway stole the cash from Dundee Council between August 2009 and May last year.

In August, he admitted fraud and was jailed for five years and four months.

The council said all but £10,000 of the stolen money had been recovered through “a range of sources”, including Conway and an insurance policy held by the local authority.

IT officer Conway, 52, of Brechin, turned to fraud after running up debts on gambling websites.

He used his “expert knowledge of the authority’s IT systems and his system access privileges” to steal the cash.

At a meeting this week, councillor­s were told: “The fraud was carried out by inserting false invoices into the payment process.

“The invoices appeared to have come from the main systems but were not actually recorded in them.

“Conway was able to capture payments made against the fraudulent invoices and divert them to bank accounts within his control.” A MONSTER was yesterday convicted of murdering his 71-year-old mother by dousing her in petrol and setting her on fire.

The High Court in Glasgow heard that the former offshore worker was furious because Cathy had embarrasse­d him at a 21st birthday party by drinking too much.

Kelly ordered her and his then partner Eleanor Banks to leave and called a taxi.

When they returned to their Kilmarnock home at about 11pm, he dragged Cathy by the arms into the house after she fell as she got out the taxi.

Kelly then punched and kicked her in the living room.
