Taste the Difference Fruit Topped Layered Chicken and Stuffing Pork Pie (840g), £12, Sainsbury’s SIMPLY unwrap and serve for an easy-peasy impressive main. It’s not huge in diameter, but a tall and chunky number that sliced well and was packed with lean and tender meat, a good hint of stuffing and the perfect amount of jelly. Wrapped in crisp hot water crust pastry and topped with a sweet mix of plump fruits, including cranberries and apricots.

Proves good things do sometimes come in small bundles Finest Scottish Salmon Side with a Mulled Cranberry Glaze (1.16kg), £19.50, Tesco SIMPLE to cook – just pop it in the oven for 28 minutes and then drizzle with the sauce which takes two minutes to heat up. A stonking great size, it looked like a dish out of a swanky cookbook and the sauce added a dramatic splash of colour. Succulent and well seasoned, the fish tasted light and fresh but the sauce was sickly sweet so we scraped it off.

An ideal foil to the excesses of Christmas Day Luxury Beef Wellington with Portobello & Dried Porcini Mushrooms (850g), £15, Iceland ALLOW this one lots of time to cook and cool. It took 35 minutes after defrosting (1hr 40min from frozen) and needed 20 minutes to rest before slicing. It looked a bit like a loaf of bread when cooked and not that amazing, but once sliced it looked more appealing. Pastry was flaky and rich, while the beef was tender with just the right balance of mushrooms to give the flavour a kick.
