Lynsey: I don’t want to be drip-fed a gold

- ATHLETICS

LYNSEY SHARP is praying her days as a drama queen are over as the Scots ace looks for an easy ride towards Gold Coast glory in April.

The former European champion has been settling into California life since jetting out to San Diego last week for a sunshine training stint but there will be time to unwind on the side.

It’s the start of a four-month countdown to the Commonwealth Games when the 27-year-old will look to strike gold following her stress-filled silver at Glasgow 2014.

But Sharp reckons her Hampden heroics, when she produced a superhuman effort in the 800 metres final after a night in the hospital hooked up to a drip, have her ready for anything.

She said: “Everyone jokes about it with me, saying, ‘It wouldn’t be you without drama.’

“Even this year in London, getting disqualified then reinstated, there is always something.

“But I flourish in that atmosphere. If it means drama to be successful, I’ll take that. Maybe not spending the night before my final on a drip though!

“I’m definitely a different athlete now. I’m a lot more robust after a couple of years with a really good gym programme. I’ve been looking after myself and become less injury-prone.

“I’ve been able to do stuff I wasn’t able to do before. Everyone has that worry in the back of their head, that you might get injured. If I can get past Christmas I’ll be all right, touch wood.”

Sharp is hoping to double up at the Commonwealths with a slot in the 4x400 relay.

She said: “My 400 pb isn’t that great but give me a baton and a running start and I’ll be confident of competing.

“There is definitely a medal up for grabs.”
