Wright: Top six will be a squeeze

-

TOP-SIX regular Tommy Wright admits St Johnstone have their work cut out to stay there – and reckons only one spot is up for grabs this season.

The Perth boss believes their rivals will splash the cash in January to stake claims for Europe or steer clear of the drop.

Wright said: “Looking at the league you could argue normal service has resumed because the five big clubs occupy the top-five places.

“Celtic are way ahead in terms of finances then you have Rangers and Aberdeen going for second, with Hibs and Hearts in behind them.

“So it has gone back to what it used to be like. They have all invested in players.

“You probably only have one place in the top six for the rest of us this season.

“There could be an outside chance of two but at the moment it looks like just being one because I think Hearts and Hibs will invest again in January.

“This is where we have a decision to make because even though we’ve taken the pressure off a bit with a couple of wins lately we still need more quality in.

“Whether that happens in January or the end of the season we’ll see. But we need to help the players who are here and who have done so well for us.”

The Perth boss, who has already secured striker David McMillan from Dundalk, has challenged his players to follow up on a historic win over Rangers by taking Hearts’ scalp on Saturday.

He added: “After losing in the manner we did against Aberdeen it showed a lot of character for the players to bounce back the way they did.

“Heart got a fantastic result against Celtic so will be full of confidence. But we’ve won two of the last three and hopefully can keep it going.”
