Bankies exit was hard but I’m having Blastie as No.2

-

GORDON ROBERTSON might qualify for junior football’s shock move of 2017 after he quit as chairman of Clydebank to take over as No.2 at rivals Kilbirnie Ladeside.

He ended a 14-year tie at the Bankies to team up with former boss Budgie McGhie at Premier League rivals Ladeside in the summer.

After his old gaffer’s resignation last season he enjoyed a winning spell as caretaker but then made way for Kieran McAnespie.

Robertson admits it left a void in his life as he explained the emotional run of events which saw him end his ties with the club he has supported since childhood.

He said: “It only took a week after standing down as caretaker boss and not being involved at training for me to realise I was missing something important to me.

“I’ve been a Bankies fan all my life but more important than that was being directly involved in the football side.

“I was on holiday in Spain when I got a call from Budgie to say he had been offered the Ladeside job and wanted me to go with him. I had always admired the club and after mulling it over I couldn’t say no. I left Bankies in a good place.

“A little part of me felt I was letting people down but I had done well by them over 14 years.”

McGhie and Robertson have exceeded expectations at the Blasties since taking over.

A Junior Cup fourthround spot has been secured and they could move within two points of top spot if they beat bottom club Cumnock at Townhead Park today.

Robertson said: “It was a total rebuild job. We are happy with the squad we’ve put together.

“We could be games away from achieving something special.”
