LEWIS SPENCE wants to bring in the New Year by getting the green light for a top-team return at Dundee.

The 21-year-old midfielder had surgery on an ankle injury last month.

But Spence is adamant he’ll be back in contention in a matter of weeks.

He said: “The injury was just one of things which is a risk to any footballer. I slipped in training when there was nobody near me, my studs got caught in the grass.

“I took an awkward landing then there was this crack and I knew it was something serious, torn ligaments in my ankle and bruising on the bone.

“It was so disappointing as I’d been playing regularly in the first team.

“At first I only thought I’d be out for a couple of weeks but it became clear I needed an operation after scans.

“The best scenario to get back playing quicker was to get the operation and I’m on schedule to return before the end of January.

“It’s just over three weeks since the op and I’m starting to walk about unaided after a few weeks on crutches.

“I’m now getting down to working on my rehab, just little things at the moment, nothing mental. I know I have a bit to go.

“I had started 10 games in a row and was doing well but this is a small setback.

“I’m looking forward to working hard and getting back and getting back into contention after the New Year.”
