FRASER BROWN has jumped to the defence of Edinburgh rival Simon Berghan who was red carded for stamping on his head.

The Glasgow hooker insisted there had been no malice intended by the prop during their dramatic 1872 Cup clash at Murrayfield.

Berghan was sent packing by Irish ref Frank Murphy after just six minutes of the opening festive derby clash.

And he will learn his fate at a disciplinary hearing in Dublin on Thursday.

Despite his absence for the vast bulk of the contest, the Gunners pulled off a remarkable 18-17 win.

Brown – who wasn’t injured in the incident – said: “It was not malicious, it looked so innocuous.

“It is the sort of thing that catches you (on the head). There was nothing in it.”

Brown believes Glasgow have become spooked by Murrayfield in recent years.

He stated: “Too many times we go there and just don’t play our game.

“We know what we have to do against them at Scotstoun this Saturday – cut out the mistakes and execute accurately.”

Meanwhile, last-gasp Edinburgh hero Chris Dean said his side will keep their feet on the ground in the build up to the return match.

He said: “There will be a spring in our step when we get back to training, but coach Richard Cockerill will bring us back to reality.

“Warriors will come back at us, firing on all cylinders for sure.”
