5 OF THE BEST DERBIES

-

IT’S derby day at new-look Tynecastle tomorrow. Here Record Sport picks five of the best capital clashes.

JANUARY 1, 1973 HEARTS 0, HIBS 7

Still an Edinburgh derby record for biggest win – and the fact Hibs dished out the hammering at Tynecastle makes it even more painful for Jambos.

Jimmy O’Rourke, Alan Gordon and Arthur Duncan all hit doubles and Alex Cropley netted the other to send Eddie Turnbull’s men top of the table.

SEPTEMBER 15, 1990 HIBS 0, HEARTS 3

A powderkeg first derby after the failed bid by then Hearts chairman Wallace Mercer to take over Hibs.

Mercer didn’t attend the game on safety advice and Hearts led 3-0 before half-time with a double from John Robertson and Craig Levein goal.

Both sets of players were removed from the field for eight minutes after a pitch invasion and there was sporadic outbreaks of crowd trouble.

At half-time police even went to the Hearts dressing room to warn of the potential for further disorder if the lead was extended. Fifty arrests were made and 17 injured fans taken to hospital.

JANUARY 2, 1996 HEARTS 4, HIBS 4

Two stoppage-time goals from sub Graeme Weir rescued a draw for Hearts in an amazing finale.

Derek Townsley and Tam McManus put Hibs 2-0 up but Steven Pressley’s penalty and Mark de Vries levelled it.

Craig James made it 3-2 Hibs in 89 minutes and a Grant Brebner spot-kick 60 seconds later looked to have won it.

Astonishingly Weir scored in the 94th and 95th minutes as the Jambos grabbed an unlikely point.

OCTOBER 22, 2000 HIBS 6, HEARTS 2

Hearts led early on through Andy Kirk but copped their heaviest derby defeat for 27 years, ending Jim Jefferies’s first spell as manager.

Hibs were inspired by a hat-trick from Mixu Paatelainen with David Zitelli, John O’Neil and Russell Latapy also on target and Colin Cameron netting a late consolation.

APRIL 2, 2006 HIBS 0, HEARTS 4

Ex-Hibs ace Paul Hartley was the Hearts hero with a Scottish Cup semifinal hat-trick. Edgaras Jankauskas bagged the other and Ivan Sproule and Gary Smith saw red for Hibees.
