Early yesterday, Pauline’s son Paul Gresham posted a comment on Armstrong’s Facebook page, saying he would “rot in hell”. Paul was

later inundated with comments from friends expressing their sympathy over his mother’s death at the home she shared with Armstrong in the Borders hamlet of Heiton.

One friend said: “This is terrible. I feel so sorry for you. Your mum was awesome, everyone’s best mate.”

Another wrote: “Beautiful lady inside and out, she was an absolute gem.

“There’s no words. Just beyond heartbreaking for you all. Stay strong for her and your sisters Paul xxx”

A third friend said she had seen tragic Pauline with her young daughter only on Christmas Day.

She wrote: “Have no words, only spoke to her Christmas night. Wi l l never forget her, she was a lovely, funloving woman. Thoughts with your family.”

Pauline was in her 40s and Arms t rong was 53. Police found their b o di e s at about 3pm.

Paul wrote on Armstrong’s Facebook page: “Kevin Armstrong rot in hell u c***. We will meet again.”

His partner, Danielle Berry, urged grief-stricken Paul to stay off social media and labelled Armstrong a “coward”.

Pauline is understood to have been a carer and had three children – Paul and his younger sisters Zoe and Tegan.

Armstrong’s brother Tommy posted: “Not the Christmas I expected.

“After a horrible incident, two people have lost their lives. I don’t know what happened but I do know there are kids out there that have lost their mummy and dad.

“We should be thinking of them and their families at this sad time.”

Later, Tommy told the Record: “Everyone is in shock.

“I live four miles from my brother and the police haven’t been to tell me what’s going on.

“I went to the station and was there for about two-and-a-half hours. They didn’t tell me anything – just that the bodies had still to be identified.

“I don’t think it was an accident, it was something more serious than that.

“I just hope the kids and the family are all going to be OK.”

Police said inquiries are ongoing. Superintendent Jim Royan added: “We understand that this is a shocking incident. We have local officers on patrol to support the community.”
